About the vascular team
The vascular team consists of seven consultant surgeons, five vascular surgical care practitioners, six vascular registrars, the vascular ward nursing staff currently based on ward 31 and four administrative staff at South Tees and a further two administrative team members at Darlington Memorial and North Tees hospitals.
The vascular team also lead the major trauma surgical service for the major trauma centre which is one of only 33 nationwide.
The renal access service to allow patients to have safe kidney dialysis provides arterio-venous fistula surgery under local anaesthetic at Redcar Hospital whilst more complex procedures are provided at the James Cook site.
We work together with the interventional vascular radiology team to provide combined procedures in the advanced hybrid vascular theatre with plans to create a further facility.
We provide a specialist complex aortic aneurysm service treating patients with thoracic and thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms using fenestrated, branched and chimney stent graft devices (FEVAR, BEVAR and CHEVAR).
We are a referral centre for the National Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme which assesses men by ultrasound on their 65th birthday to identify those patients early and prevent rupture of the aorta.
Working together with the diabetic foot team, foot and ankle surgeons, microbiologist, plastic surgeons, vascular radiologists, musculoskeletal radiologist, specialist nursing and the podiatry team we work to reduce major amputations across the region.
We work closely with the acute stroke team to provide operations to reduce future major strokes called a carotid endarterectomy removing hardening of the artery supplying blood to the brain.
We input our data into The National Vascular Registry which publishes publicly available reports via the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland and are active in the NHS England Regional Vascular Advisory Group and Diabetic Foot Network.
