During your scan or procedure a dye was injected into your vein via a cannula (small flexible plastic tube). This was done to enhance your blood vessels and organs to aid our diagnosis.
On rare occasions the cannula may fail and cause the dye to leak into the surrounding tissues. This can occur due to a number of reasons, including fragile veins, dislodged cannula or difficult cannulation.
The affected limb may feel uncomfortable for several days.
We recommend the following action:
- Raise the affected limb and massage.
- Apply cold compression (such as an ice pack) for short periods of time.
- Monitor the affected area for signs of swelling (redness or heat).
- Take your usual pain relief (eg paracetamol) if needed.
- If symptoms become more severe or, on very rare occasions, the skin breaks seek medical advice from your GP.
